In-Depth Review
CPL Retail Energy is now part of the Direct Energy family of companies. Centrica, the parent company of both CPL Retail Energy and Direct Energy made the smart decision to consolidate their brands in Texas, which include CPL Retail Energy (South Texas), WTU (West Texas) and Direct Energy.

Until recently, CPL Retail Energy and WTU both served residential, commercial and industrial customers in a regulated incumbent footprint that they controlled with the supervision of the Public Utility Commisssion of Texas. After deregulation offered customers choice in those areas, the need for the parent company, Centrica, to introduce a competitive brand (Direct Energy) became apparent. Centrica was then able to secure profits through the marketing of an old and trusted brand "CPL Retail Energy" while also securing customers seeking real savings through marketing their competitive brand "Direct Energy".

Now, with the inflated "Price to Beat" about to end for Texas consumers, the profit opportunity is also going away for old incumbents like CPL Retail Energy. For this reason, it appears that Direct Energy is the only brand that Centrica intends to market going forward.
