In-Depth Review
Direct Energy has reason to boast at being the "largest competitive energy retailer in North America" and as part of Centrica, they indeed are. Centrica's multi-national presence has $33 billion in sales and 32 million customers worldwide.
Direct Energy, through Centrica, owns three power generation facilities in Texas which means they can meet about 31% of their demand in Texas from it's own assets. That diversification keeps Direct Energy hedged against much market volatility ensuring they can weather the storm energy markets can sometimes deliver. This leaves little room for worry for customers who have been burnt by some of the smaller REP's who's financial woes have forced them to either raise their rates or drop customers altogether. Because of Direct Energy's financial stability, they are often able to attract customers with a justified concern about their providers ability to continue serving them despite unfavorable market conditions.
Direct Energy has an impressive portfolio of customers, including many household names. Even more important than Direct Energy's customer portfolio is how competitive their energy products and pricing can be with regard to small, medium and large commercial customers.
One important area that Direct Energy has recognized it needs to focus more attention to is their ability to take on new opportunities. As quickly as they are growing, sometimes it is difficult to have the attention to detail when attracting new business than some are able to deliver. Several major competitors have chosen a model that is more selective in the type of customer they target which allows them to deliver a more thoroughly satisfactory customer experience.
There is no doubt that Direct Energy has an excellent position in the Texas marketplace. With their parent company controlling incumbant providers WTU and CP&L, Direct Energy has the brand partnerships and capital they need to continue their success in Texas.
